Difference Between ArrayList and LinkedList in Java (1500 characters)
In Java, both ArrayList and LinkedList implement the List interface but differ in performance, internal structure, and usage.
ArrayList is backed by a dynamic array. It provides fast random access to elements (O(1) time for get(index)), making it ideal for scenarios where frequent read operations are needed. However, inserting or deleting elements, especially in the middle, is slower (O(n)) because it may involve shifting elements.
LinkedList, on the other hand, is implemented as a doubly-linked list. Each element is a node holding data and references to the previous and next nodes. It allows faster insertion and deletion (O(1)) if you already have the reference to the node. However, accessing elements by index is slower (O(n)) since traversal is required from the beginning or end.
Memory-wise, LinkedList consumes more memory due to storing node references. ArrayList uses less memory and offers better cache performance due to contiguous memory allocation.
Use ArrayList when you need fast access and fewer insert/delete operations.
Use LinkedList when you have many insertions/deletions and don’t need frequent random access.
