The Virtual DOM in React is a lightweight, in-memory representation of the actual DOM (Document Object Model). Instead of directly manipulating the real DOM—which can be slow and resource-intensive—React uses this virtual copy to optimize updates.

Here’s how it works: when the state or data of a React component changes, React first updates the Virtual DOM rather than the browser’s DOM.
