Lazy loading and eager loading are two techniques used to fetch related data in applications, especially in ORMs like Hibernate, JPA, or Django ORM.
Lazy Loading means data is not loaded immediately when the object is fetched. Instead, the related data is retrieved only when it is accessed for the first time. For example, if you load a User entity, its associated Orders list will not be retrieved until you explicitly call user.getOrders(). This saves memory and improves performance when you don’t always need related data. However, it may lead to the N+1 query problem, where multiple queries are fired repeatedly when iterating over relationships.
Eager Loading means related data is loaded along with the main object in a single query. For example, if you load a User, its Orders are fetched immediately. This avoids extra queries and improves performance when you know the related data will always be used. But it may waste resources if large, unnecessary data sets are fetched eagerly.
In short, lazy loading is demand-based and memory-efficient but may increase query count, while eager loading is pre-fetching that reduces queries but can load unused data. The choice depends on the use case.
